Exene Cervenka fuses her interest in found objects, Americana, and evangelical religion into rich, complex collages.
Since she first started touring with Los Angeles firebrands X in the late'70s, Cervenka has kept one eye on the stage, one eye on the street for kooky collectibles. Whatever she stumbled across that appealed to her, she'd pick up. Any source was fair game -- thrift stores, flea markets, truck stops.
"But mostly off the street," she says. "Gum, candy and snack wrappers. A white wooden sign stenciled with the word 'God.'... I've gathered a million different things, and I still have'em," Cervenka says. "And then I put it all together and make art out of it."
"I'm very American. I love our culture. I love the pieces, the most mundane stuff about our culture, and I think you can make the best art out of an ordinary item that is usually thrown away or people don't care about."
Ranch-n-Roll is pleased to have lassoed the wild and wily Lina Lecaro, LA WEEKLY's Nightranger correspondent, for a special book signing on December 3rd from 6-10pm.
Lina has been patrolling Los Angeles' most decadent after dark dens and its grungiest grottos with equal aplomb for over twenty years (i.e. before she could actually drink legally). A born and bred Angeleno, she's no angel when it comes to digging deep into LA's most harrowing drunkard-approved hovels . She might prefer her cocktails sweet, but her favorite bars (and barflys) have always been anything but.
LOS ANGELES'S BEST DIVE BARS - DRINKING AND DIVING IN THE CITY OF ANGELS is the new definitive explorer's guide to over 100 of the city's many boozed-up hideaways, hangouts and hotspots.
The Ranch-n-Roll gallery proudly debuts the new work of Anita Rosenberg.
"VIRGIN MARY OF GUADALUPES is a shrine series inspired by a trip to Mexico where I attended a friend's lavish wedding. Taking a daytrip to a nearby cemetery I was mesmerized by the magnitude of Virgin Mary statuary. Every gravesite had its own unique sculpture garden of Mary with her weathered patina that added to her mystery. These statues were haunting. By combining photography with my signature handmade assemblage frames I have created my own shrines and altars."
On December 12, from 2 to 7pm, join Anita in celebrating one of the most important dates on the Mexican calendar, The Feast Day of the Virgin.
Art on display through mid February, 2011; call Ranch-n-Roll for hours
